  • Artemis II: NASA targets April 1 for the launch

    Further to a Flight Readiness Review (FRR) that took place this week, NASA held a press conference today to highlight the progress made toward the Artemis II crewed test flight around the Moon. Work is continuing on the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft in NASA Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) after a helium flow issue was encountered in February. In addition to addressing this issue, technicians also installed new batteries and retested the flight termination system and avionics and control systems. The mission management team was satisfied with the thorough discussions about risks and the overall results of the FRR and determined that they would try to launch as early as April 1, 2026, pending completion of all required work in the VAB and at the launch pad. The launch window opens at 6:24 pm ET.

  • Monitoring radiation for astronaut health

    Radiation is one of the key challenges faced by astronauts living and working beyond the protective shield of Earth’s atmosphere. As Canada and its international partners advance plans for missions to the Moon, and eventually Mars, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) continues to invest in technology to better understand exposure levels. The CSA has awarded a contract of $5.5 million to Bubble Technology Industries for the continued development of the CANS, a compact and autonomous instrument designed to measure neutron radiation exposure in space.

  • Artemis II: NASA prepares to roll back rocket to assembly building, will not launch in March

    NASA will be rolling back the Artemis II SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida observing interrupted flow of helium in the rocket’s interim cryogenic propulsion stage (ICPS). Weather pending, the roll back will take place on Tuesday, February 24. NASA is investigating potential faults, but accessing and remediating any of these issues can only be performed in the VAB. This removes the March launch opportunities from consideration.

The Yellowknife Amateur Radio Society has completed its internal review in the aftermath of the 2023 wildfire events in the Northwest Territories, including the evacuation of Yellowknife.  Most of the results of the review are of an internal nature and not for publication.

The Society maintains a VHF repeater system operating on the 2-metre band (and 70-cm band).  This system provides continuous radio communication for amateur radio operators in Yellowknife (VE8YK) and in Behchokǫ̀ (VE8RAE).  This includes continuous coverage along Highway 3 between the two communities.  There is also a range of about 40 km around Yellowknife and Behchokǫ̀.  The Society maintained a 24/7 radio watch on the repeater system from about May until the evacuation order of August 16, 2023.  Those amateur radio operators remaining in Yellowknife continued to make use of the repeater system.  The repeater system also has an operational Internet Relay Linking Project (IRLP) node.  That was used at least once with a station calling from the United Kingdom.  The repeater system being used during the evacuation to obtain reports of the conditions on Highway 3, including smoke and traffic conditions.  The repeater system continued to operate throughout the evacuation.  See:  Society is Returning to Operation .

Special Callsigns for 2024

2024-02-21 10:16:00 - Yellowknife - There is a series of upcoming special callsigns that have been allocated by the Government of Canada (ISED) including anniversaries of the founding of the Royal Canadian Air Force, HMCS HAIDA, the RCMP, the Yukon and various educational institutions.  

A number of provincial callsigns have been registered for the month of April, such as VE7RCAF to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force.  This is a similar technique to how the 80th anniversary of the first operational sortie of the AVRO Lancaster bomber was carried out.  YARS participated in that and obtained the special callsign VE80LAN.  Only two operators participated in the VE80LAN project and only one QSO was achieved.
