2005 Inner Whalebacks April 17

YARS, in conjunction with the Government of the Northwest Territories (Department of Municipal and Community Affairs) and Environment Canada, operates and maintains a weather repeater that beams marine weather forecasts up the East Arm of Great Slave Lake.

The station is weather resistant, solar powered and runs on rechargeable batteries.  Equipment does degrade over time, especially in the harsh cold and the high UV light.

Every year YARS and representatives of local agencies (Coast Guard Auxiliary, YK Search and Rescue Association and some members of the Canadian Forces) go out to the site to carry out an inspection of the equipment and basic repairs.
